Rachel Sahmie was a daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. She was a sister of noted potters Jean Sahmie, and Bonnie Sahmie. This is a classic Hopi-Tewa canteen. The front is painted with a classic Nampeyo of Hano-stylized Sikyatki bird. The bird’s head is at the top with an elongated beak. The canteen was coil-built from red Hopi clay, then stone polished and painted with bee-weed (black). It was traditionally fired which creates blushes on the surface. Is signed with her “Koo Loo” and “RS” stylized hallmark. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
