Rose Simpson is one of the exciting innovative potters working today.  While she is known for her figurative work, this piece combines a classic vessel form with her creative painting.  The jar is entitled, “Call a Spade a Spade”.  There are figures on both sides, and one is holding a Jack of Spades card.  In the background are the words “hearts”, “Jack”, “King” and the word “Spade” is written in black.  Some of the areas are glazed and the others are matte. The jar plays on the meaning behind the name of the vessel in both the words and figures.  It’s a reflection on honesty.  Rose continues to expand her style in various museum exhibitions around the US and create new and more dynamic works in clay.
