Jeff Suina works in clay and multi-media. Each piece is made from native clay and painted with mineral clays for the design. This is one of his creative sculptural pieces. The jar is slab-built to create the flat sides. The piece is entitled “Ice”. The piece has angles with the feeling of faceted ice crystals. There are numerous contrasting edges to the jar. The red has mica in the clay, which is a striking addition to the piece creating reflection in those areas.
Jeff said of this piece:
“Massive and unrelenting, Iceberg is brutally geometric and looks like it can take down an ocean liner or two! With blunt triangular faces jutting out in every direction. I looked at actual icebergs and rock formations as influences. I wanted to integrate unpainted voids to add depth to this mesmerizing piece, as well as numerous contemporary Cochiti Pueblo designs.”
The scale and dynamic motion in this form is exceptional. Take a closer look at the painted designs. They are all variations of classic Cochiti sun, rain, and lightning designs. Jeff has used the angles of the shape to match the lines of the imagery across the surface. The contrasting positive and negative spaces are visually striking to the eye. The piece is signed, “Jeff Suina”.
