Tafoya, Camilio – Jar with Corn and Corn Dancers (1972)
$ 700.00
This jar by Camilio Tafoya is from 1972. It is fully polished and fully designed. The rim is matte. On the sides are two large groups of corn. Separaring them are two medallions. One has a female Corn Dancer wearing a tablita with additional corn in the background. The opposite side has a male Corn Dancer holding a rabbit. The designs were lightly etched into the clay before it was fired. Camilio first began making larger carved pottery like his sister, Margaret Tafoya. In the 1970s, he began making sgraffito pieces on his own when he was living with his daughter, Grace Medicine Flower. All of the etching on his pieces was done before they were fired so that he was able to get the smooth tan coloration in the background. The piece is signed on the bottom “Camilio Tafoya”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
