Tafoya, Camilio – Plate with Basket Dancers (1985)

4.5" diameter

$ 1,200.00

This is one of the few plates we have seen by Camilio Tafoya.  The piece is from 1985.   This is the first one from that period with two dancers. There are male and female Basket Dancers.  Note how the female dancer is holding a basket in her hand.  There is great detail in the feathers, leggings, and sash.  The rim has cloud, rain, and snow patterns.  The back is also fully polished with rain and cloud designs.  The piece was highlighted with blue, green, white, and red clay slips.  It is signed on the back “Camilio Sunflower Tafoya”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  Did you know that Camilio Tafoya was a brother of noted potter Margaret Tafoya? He began by making carved pottery and only began making miniatures in the early 1970s.  His etched designs included cultural references along with classic animal imagery.
