Tafoya, Camilio – Plate with Buffalo Dancer (1985)
This one of the few miniature plates we have seen by Camilio Tafoya. The piece is from 1985. It is fully polished on the front and then etched with a Buffalo Dancedr as the design. Note the detail in the feathers and the leggings! The various colors are additional clay slips. The back rim of the plate is also fully polished and etched with rain and lightning designs. It is signed on the back “Camilio Sunflower Tafoya”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. Did you know that Camilio Tafoya was a brother of noted potter Margaret Tafoya? He began by making carved pottery and only began making miniatures in the early 1970’s. His etched designs included cultural references along with classic animal imagery.
