This is a large, thin-walled squash or gourd jar by Jennifer Tafoya. First, let’s talk about the jar!  The shape is fantastic with 17 rounded areas on the shoulder to create this organic shape.  It is SO thin walled and VERY highly stone polished.  It unusual for Jennifer to fully polish a piece this size to such a high shine.  She said that after she fired it, that is simply glowed with its shine and she didn’t want to take it all away!  The jar is etched with 28 different frogs. They are above and below the shoulder.  Each frog is different and they look like they are climbing all over the gourd.  Each is highly detailed for their size and each is in a different position.  It is quite exceptional and reflects the artist allowing the clay to speak as much as the design.  Beautiful restraint!  The piece is highlighted with various natural clay slips. The piece is signed, “Jennifer Tafoya”.  Jennifer continues to be one of the leading innovative potters working today and the winner of “Best of Show” at Santa Fe Indian Market in 2023.
