This is a water jar by Jennifer Tafoya. It is entitled, “Ancient Sunset”. The jar has a scene with pteradactyls. At times, it seems that these are the most unusual of Jennifer’s pottery, as it is not just a specific animal but a story. The jar has a Rhamphorhynchus, Thallasadromeous, pterasaur, and mosgasur. The jar is fully polished and carved at various levels. Note the depth of carving on the clouds! The pterodactyls are flying above the water, catching fish. Below the shoulder, under the water, are more fish. The background sky of the jar is highlighted with various clays to create the sunset. There are over 20 different figures in this piece, each interacting to create a dynamic scene. The piece is highlighted with various natural clay slips. The piece is signed, “Jennifer Tafoya”. Jennifer continues to be one of the leading innovative potters working today and the winner of “Best of Show” at Santa Fe Indian Market in 2023.
