Tafoya, Jennifer – Jar with Blue Carpenter Bees and Blue Banded Bees
This is a tightly etched and designed jar by Jennifer Tafoya. She is known for her clay vessels and also her amazing animal figures. This jar is fully polished with as square shape and elongated neck. There are two Blue Carpenter Bees and three Blue Banded Bees. I have to admit, I didn’t even know there were blue bees! The Blue Banded bees are from Australia and the Blue Carpenter bees are from Southeast Asia. I’ve put in a few additional photos of the blue bees in real life! The jar is highly polished and each of the bees is realistic in design. They are wonderfully etched into the clay and surrounded by small flowers. I included some “close up” photos of the bees, as they are a bit hard to see with the highly polished area surrounding them! There is a swirling design in the background that is etched and highlighted with mica. The bottom of the jar has additional flowers. Jennifer continues to not just be creative in design but in technique. All the various colors are derived from natural clay slips. The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Jennifer Tafoya”.
