Tafoya, Jennifer – Jar with Spotted Eagle Ray and Ocellated Eagle Rays

Jennifer Tafoya is known for her clay vessels and amazing animal figures! This jar has a square shape and an elongated neck. The entire piece is fully polished. There are spotted eagle rays and ocellated eagle rays etched into the clay. Each is highly detailed and note how she created the movement of the rays, some with their fins curled! In the background there is more deeply etched spiral designs in the black. The small circles near the edges are slipped with mica, to look like the sand. It a complex and fluid piece! After Jennifer has etched the designs into the clay, she then adds additional clay slips for the various colors. All the various colors are derived from natural clays that Jennifer seeks out herself. It is signed on the bottom, “Jennifer Tafoya”. Jennifer continues to be one of the leading innovative potters working today!
