This is an exceptional large jar by Jennifer Tafoya.  She is known for her clay vessels and also her amazing animal figures!  This jar is one of her larger pieces and it is the shape of a storage jar with a high shoulder and a short neck. This shape of jar creates a lot of surface area for design!  The entire piece is fully etched with 36 Spotted Eagle Rays.  She has them swirling around the entire surface of the jar.  Each one is in a different position.  The backs are either etched dots or small circles, creating hundreds of them across the entire jar.  As some are swimming upward, she has also captured the realism of the bottom of the rays. There are water designs around the neck of the jar and a stylized avanyu near the base.  It’s great to see Jennifer working on pieces of this size with a highly polished surface and a traditionally shaped jar.  All the colors are derived from natural clay slips.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Jennifer Tafoya”.  Definitely an exceptional piece of her pottery art.
