Tafoya, Jennifer – Large Seedpot with Harris Hawk and Avanyu

Jennifer Tafoya is known for her clay vessels and also her amazing animal figures.  This large seedpot is fully polished and designed on the top and sides.  The top has a large Harris Haw etched into the clay. The feathers on the hawk are among the most realistic I’ve seen of hers.  I think it is how she created shading and shadows with the polished surfaces.  The feathers almost appear as if they are in relief.  It is a striking effect.  The hawk is sitting on a crab apple tree.  The branches are realistically etched.  The edge of the seedpot has classic Santa Clara cloud and wind designs.  The bottom sides have an avanyu (water serpent) encircling the piece.  All the various colors are derived from natural clay slips.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Jennifer Tafoya”.  I’ve included photos of the piece with various lighting as the surface is highly polished and it was hard to capture everything in one shot.
