Jennifer Tafoya is known for her clay vessels and also her amazing animal figures. This water jar is highly polished and fired a deep, glossy black. The jar has twelve piranhas etched into the clay. Check out the detail on the scales of each fish as Jennifer said she used mica on the surface of the fish so that they have a silvery look like scales! She said she spent a lot of time with the extra detail. Near the top of the shoulder are water designs slipped in mica. Below the shoulder is an avanyu encircling the jar. Note how she etched the clouds to have very subtle coloration. All the various colors are derived from natural clay slips. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Jennifer Tafoya”.
