Tafoya, LuAnn – Large Red and Tan Water Jar (1990) with Ribbon

This is a large carved water jar from LuAnn Tafoya.  She is a daughter of Margaret Tafoya and known for her large, highly polished pottery.  This jar is carved with eight vertical bands. They alternate being polished tan and red.  The tan is the natural color of the clay while the red is a clay slip that is polished.  The jar is fired a rich coloration and the red and tan contrasts are visually striking.  The area above the shoulder is polished red.  The jar was traditionally fired and it is signed on the bottom in the clay, ‘LuAnn Tafoya”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It has a second-place ribbon from the 1990 Eight Northern Pueblos Indian Fair. One of the judges on the ribbon is Richard Spivey, who was known for his books on Maria Martinez.
