12.5" Diameter

WOW!  This is an exceptional and very unusual large plate by Margaret Tafoya.  The plate is from the 1940s and is one of her few painted redware pieces.  The plate is fully polished on the front and back.  On the front, the plate is painted with red clay for the design and it has a white outline.  This style is called, “red-on-red with white outline”.  As might be expected, it is very time-consuming to paint and outline with white clay.  The result is striking with the unique flow of design and check out the eye of the avanyu with the rain “lashes”.  Pieces like this large plate capture a distinctive moment in time in Margaret’s pottery and it is rare to find them in such great condition and at this size!  The plate is signed on the back in the clay “Margaret”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Definitely a piece of Pueblo history in clay!
