This is a classic double-shoulder water jar by Margaret Tafoya. The jar is coil-built, stone polished, and traditionally fired. The shape has a high double shoulder. The double shoulder isn’t added to the jar, but it is the actual shape of the jar! It goes in then up to the second shoulder and the up to the neck. That is a lot of movement for the clay at this size! The jar has four bear paws encircling the piece. LuAnn (her daughter) says there is one bear paw for each of the four directions. The bear paws are impressed or carved into the clay before the piece is fired. The jar is fully polished to a high shine. The jar was traditionally fired to a silvery black. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Margaret” It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. An elegant and visually striking important historic jar by Margaret Tafoya.

The book, "Born of Fire," follows her life and art over many decades. It is also the only book to identify her pottery by the decade produced using the variations in her signature. This book is the first complete biography of Margaret Tafoya's life. It is divided into decades, giving the reader a deeper understanding of her life and pottery over nearly 100 years. There are new biographies on Virginia Ebelacker, Richard Ebelacker, Lee Tafoya, Linda Tafoya, Jennie Trammel, Mela Youngblood, Nathan Youngblood, Nancy Youngblood, Toni Roller, Jeff Roller, LuAnn Tafoya, Daryl Whitegeese, Mary Ester Archuleta, and Shirley Tafoya. The photography of the pottery in this book is exceptional. Throughout the book, personal narratives by family members and family photographs create a wonderful sense of her humanity and artistic accomplishments.
