Tafoya, Margaret – Jar with Mesa and Lightning Designs (1980’s)

6.5"w x 7"h

$ 4,400.00

This is a classic carved jar by Margaret Tafoya is from the 1980s.  The jar is coil built and has a round body and a slightly turned out neck.  Around the sides, it is carved with a mountain, lightning, and rain design.  It tells the story, as the jar is turned, of the wind, rain, and clouds blowing in over the mesa with the pueblos below (see the little rectangular design below the steps of the mountains.  That represents the Pueblo).  The jar is highly polished and fired black.  Much of Margaret’s pottery in the 1980s was smaller than the massive pieces of the 1960s and 70s.  However, there is an undeniable continuation of quality and creativity in this period.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Margaret Tafoya”.  It’s an exceptional piece in both design and polish and great to get a piece in the gallery by Margaret in such exceptional condition!
