Tafoya, Shirley – Water Jar with Carved Avanyu (1980s)
Shirley “Cactus Blossom” Tafoya was the youngest daughter of Margaret Tafoya and known for her miniature pottery. This jar is from the late 1980s. It is a classic Santa Clara water jar shape. The neck and base are polished to a glossy shine. The central band is a deeply carved avanyu. It is amazing how deeply she could carve into the pottery on such small pieces! The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Shirley Cactus Blossom Tafoya”. A classic of Tafoya Family pottery!
