Joe Talachy (b. 1943) and Thelma Talachy (b. 1942) are two of the few potters from Pojoaque Pueblo in New Mexico. Thelma is a sister of Minnie Vigil, Lois Gutierrez, and Gloria Garcia. Their daughter, Melissa Talachy, is also a well-known potter. Each piece is coil-built and painted with natural clay slips. This is a very intricately painted piece of their pottery. The jar has a round shoulder and an elongated neck. There are five different colors of clay used on this piece, making it a true polychrome (more than three colors). The jar has cloud and rain designs that swirl down from the neck. Note how in each section the design changes, as do the colors. It is a visually dynamic and fluid piece with great coloration! The jar was traditionally fired. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Joe & Thelma Talachy”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
