Tapia, Tom & Sue – Large Jar with Carved Rain Bands and Pueblo Dancers (1990s)

7"w x 6.5"h

$ 1,500.00

This is a large jar by Tom and Sue Tapia.  The jar was coil-built, carved, and stone polished by Sue.  The neck of the jar is matte and there are four carved half-medallions with design.  Below the shoulder are 48 linear “rain” bands.  Each is individually polished. In the medallions, there are designs etched by Tom Tapia.  One has sun design, two have different scenes with Deer Dancers, and the last has a Hano Katsina with a bear paw and a carved band of feathers.  They are striking and complicated designs etched into the clay.  The reddish color in the area surrounding the sgraffito designs is a “signature” clay color for Tom’s pottery designs.  The jar is signed, “Tom & Sue Tapia”.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
