Tapia, Tom & Sue – Red Bowl with Cloud Rim, Katsina and Sun Designs (1990s)

This is one of the few redward collaborative pieces we have had by Tom and Sue Tapia. The bowl was coil-built, carved, and polished by Sue Tapia. Amazingly, she carved out the rim to create a cloud pattern! Around the sides, the jar is carved into sections that were then etched with design by Tom. One section has a Sun design with corn, the next a Hano Katsina figure with a drum and sun pattern. There is another large sun design with a Pueblo in the center. The last section has a Hilili Katsina with a bear paw track and corn plant. Each of the four scenes is intricate in design. Near the base is a band of interlocking clouds and mesas in matte and red clay. The jar was traditionally fired red. It is signed, “Tom & Sue Tapia”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Tapia, Sue (b. 1945)
Sue Tapia (b. 1945) is originally from Laguna Pueblo and was married to noted potter Tom Tapia. They made pottery together, along with Sue making her own individual pieces. After Tom passed away in 2105 she moved back to Laguna Pueblo. She continues to make a few pieces every year. Her pottery is all made from native clay, carved, stone polished, and traditionally fired.
Tapia, Tom (1946-2015)
Tom Tapia is one of the most renown potters from San Juan Pueblo, creating a very intricate style of incised pottery. He is a son of Leonidas Cata Tapia and the husband of potter Sue Tapia. He learned to make pottery from his mother. He has won numerous awards for his pottery at events such as Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum Indian Fair.
