Pablita Velarde (1918-2006) was among the first women painters from the Pueblos. This painting is undated from the 1970s. It is one of her “earth paintings”. Pablita would use rocks and minerals and grind them up into a powder to make her paints. The style was inspired by Navajo sandpaintings. This painting has Santa Clara Eagle Dancer as the design. Note the detail in the wings, headdress, and body of the figure! The painting comes in the original frame, which was painted off-white. It is signed, “Pablita Velarde”.
