Velarde, Pablita – “White Buffalo” Painting (1981)
Pablita Velarde (1918-2006) was among the first women painters from the Pueblos. This painting is from 1981. It is one of her “earth paintings”. Pablita would use rocks and minerals and grind them up into a powder to make her paints. The style was inspired by Navajo sandpaintings. This painting has a white buffalo as the central design. It is surrounded by plant and cloud patterns. The painting comes in the original frame. It is signed, “Pablita Velarde, 1981”.
