Whitegeese, Daryl – Gourd Jar with Nine Panels (2009) with Ribbon
$ 3,000.00
This is a classic “gourd” jar by Daryl Whitegeese. Daryl has said he was inspired by the shapes and forms made by his grandmother, Margaret Tafoya. The jar has a round shape and a short neck. There are nine indented sections on the jar below the sharp shoulder.
Why is it called a gourd jar? Mary Ester Archuleta told me the story about the form in the book, Born of Fire:
The Story of the Gourd Pot” “Remember the story about the gourd. The gourd was asking Mother Clay, why she was just used for shaping the pottery. Why was she not given her own design? So she was allowed to create her own design. That’s why we have this shape, with the flat sides.” Mary Esther Archuleta, Born of Fire
. The entire piece was fully polished and fired a glassy black. The piece is signed on the bottom, ‘Daryl Whitegeese”. The jar has a second-place ribbon from the 2009 Heard Indian Market. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. Definitely a classic piece keeping family history alive!
