Yazzie, Angie – 18″ Tall Micaceous Water Jar (2000)

Angie Yazzie is renowned for her thin-walled Taos pottery. Each piece is coil built and made from micaceous clay from near Taos Pueblo.  Angie focuses on traditional shapes along with making each piece nearly paper thin!  It almost feels like there is nothing there when you hold one! This is a large, thin-0walled water jar.  It has a low, sharp shoulder an elongated neck, and a flaring rim.  The piece is amazingly thin walled!  It was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface.  Angie fires her pieces using wood and on this piece, the dark coloration is from the heat of the firing.  It is signed on the bottom, “Angie Yazzie”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.   She has won numerous awards for her work, including “Best of Pottery” at Santa Fe Indian Market in 2017 and the New Mexico Governor’s Award.

Angie Yazzie is the daughter of Mary Archuleta (Taos) and Nick Yazzie (Dine). Angie was raised at Taos Pueblo. She began making pottery when she was nine years old and learned from both her mother and her grandmother, Isabel Archuleta. She makes pottery from the Taos micaceous clay. Each piece is coil built and wood-fired. Angie has won numerous awards for her pottery, including “Best of Pottery” at Santa Fe Indian Market.
