Lucy Year Flower was a daughter-in-law of Camilio Tafoya and a sister-in-law of Joseph Lonewolf and Grace Medicine Flower. She began making pottery in the 1970s and was known for her flowing carved designs.  This is one of her signature “infinity bowls”.  It is coil-built with openings on either side and the designs extending across the top of the piece.  It is a creative use of shape and design. The sides are deeply carved with two Sun Faces and one avanyu on the top of the piece.  There are cloud and plant designs around the side of the bowl.  The openings on either side create the “infinity” form.  She was inspired by the classic “ouroboros”, which is the snake eating its own tail. Creative and beautifully carved and polished!  Typical of her work, look at the matte area surrounding the polished designs and note the deeply incised lines.  Lucy would do this to help accentuate her carving.  The bottom is simply polished and note the concave bottom.  The bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed, “Lucy Year Flower” on the bottom.
