Christopher Youngblood creates intricately carved vessels that reflect a perfect balance of matte and polished surfaces with intricately carved designs. This jar has a round body and a turned-out rim. The neck and base are carved with wind and cloud designs in the negative space. The body of the jar has five hummingbirds carved into the clay. Take a closer look as their wings are rounded out like melon ribs! Each bird is detailed in its carving and stone polished to a high shine. Next to the birds are flowers with five carved petals and each is fully polished. There is an exceptional amount of work on this jar in terms of the number of carved areas and that each section is individually stone polished! The piece was traditionally fired to a glassy black coloration. It is signed on the bottom, ‘Chris Youngblood”. Chris has won “Best of Pottery” at Santa Fe Indian Market and “Best of Pottery” at Gallup Ceremonials. He was featured in the book, Spoken Through Clay, and continues to be one of the leading young potters working today.
