Youngblood, Christopher – “Butterflies and Flowers” Red Carved Bowl, Ribbon

5.25"w x 2.75"h

$ 4,200.00

Christopher Youngblood creates intricately carved vessels that reflect a perfect balance of matte and polished surfaces with intricately carved designs.  This piece is part of a series entitled, “Reflections”, which draws inspiration from the painted pottery of Sarafina Tafoya. This jar hs four butterflies that are very deeply carved into the clay.  The carving is exceptional, as are the rounded flowers separating them.  The remainder of the bowl is matte.  It was traditionally fired a deep red coloration. The last photo is one of a polychrome jar by Sarafina from the 1930s, which inspired this bowl. It is signed on the bottom, ‘Chris Youngblood”. Chris has won “Best of Pottery” at Santa Fe Indian Market and “Best of Pottery” at Gallup Ceremonials.  He was featured in the book, Spoken Through Clay, and continues to be one of the leading young potters working today.  The bowl has a blue ribbon from the 2023 Gallup Ceremonials.
