This is an unusual jar by Maria Martinez and Santana. The jar was coil-built and polished by Maria Martinez and painted by her daughter-in-law, Santana. The jar has a sharp shoulder and sloping side. There are seed designs (the two half-ovals) along with leaf patterns. It is the leaf designs that are more unusual. The jar is VERY highly polished and fired to a glassy black. It is striking in person! The jar is signed “Marie + Santana” on the bottom in the clay before it was fired. The jar is from the 1940s. It is in nearly excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
