Martinez, Maria – Water Jar with 38 Feathers (Maria + Santana) 1954-6

7"w x 6.5"h

This is a classic water jar by Maria Martinez. The jar was coil-built and polished by Maria Martinez.  It was then painted by her daughter-in-law, Santana.  The jar has a round shape and a sloping neck.  It is highly polished and has a 38 feathers painted around the neck.  Below the feathers are three horizontal bands.  The jar was fired to a silvery gunmetal coloration.  It is signed, “Maria + Santana” on the bottom in the clay before it was fired.  The jar is from the 1954-6 period.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It was fired very hot, so there is a slight crackling on one side from the heat if you look closely.  However, this is not unexpected with a gumetal coloration derived from the heat of the outdoor fire.  Definitely an exciting and visually dynamic plate with spectacular design and coloration!
