Chavarria, Stella – Water Jar with Carved Avanyu and 13 Carved Feathers (1980s)
$ 350.00
Stella Chavarria is a daughter of noted potter Teresita Naranjo and a granddaughter of Christina Naranjo. This is a classic piece of her pottery. The jar has a water jar shape with an elongated neck. The neck is fully carved with a feather pattern. There are thirteen deeply carved feathers encircling the jar. Around the body of the piece is an avanyu (water serpent). There is certainly a similarity to her mother’s work (Teresita Naranjo) in the style of carving. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Stella Chavarria”. The piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. While Stella makes very little pottery today, her work continues to reflect Santa Clara’s pottery traditions.
