WOW!  This is a spectacular large designed water jar by Marie Z. Chino.  The piece is from the 1960s and it is a tightly painted piece that incorporates the “op-art” style of design in Acoma pottery.  The shape of the jar is stunning with a high shoulder and short neck.  The piece is coil built, painted with bee-weed (a plant), and traditionally fired.  The design is a very complicated black-and-white interlocking butterfly pattern.  Between each butterfly is a lightning and rain design. This may well be her most iconic design.  The complex pattern has a very dynamic appearance to the eye.  It was inspired by Chaco Canyon black and white style pottery.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Marie Z. Chino”.  Simply spectacular at this size!
