This new painting by Sheridan MacKnight is entitled, “Canté Winyan/ Heart Woman”. It is acrylic and gouache on linen.
She said of this painting:
I entitled this piece “Canté Winyan/ Heart Woman” or “Eve”. I look at it as a sort of “self portrtait”, as my middle name is Eve. I want it to be a reflection of hope and a better outlook on life. I use this figure often in my work and I like to think of her as a representation of all women.”
Sheridan MacKnight (Hunkpapa Lakota, White Earth Chippewa) is a painter whose work reflects a contemporary Native American perspective with spirituality and grace.
“My work honors my Native American roots, and to the strong and spiritual devotions of my people. I am Lakota from the Hunkpapa clan and Chippewa from the White Earth Band. My images reflect the heart and emotion of my relations, be it historically or in the present time in the narration of the composition. My process, practice, and narrative reflect my heritage, a culture of women, regalia, love, prayer, hope, emotion, and hardship. Through my work, I tell a story of resilience, which draws strength through historic photographs and ledger art, championing Native American women and children.”
Sheridan has won awards at Satna Fe Indian Market, The Heard Museum Market and been part of museum shows at MoCNA, the Hood Museum (Darthmouth), the Heard Museum, and the Hammer Museum (LA).
