Martinez, Maria – 9″ Wide Bowl with Rain Designs, “Marie + Julian” (1930s)
This is a classic large bowl by Maria Martinez and her husband, Julian. Maria would make the pottery and Julian would paint the design. The last photo is one of Maria and Julian in 1937. This bowl is a round shape and highly polished. It is painted with a rain and lightning design separated by pairs of prayer feathers. The bowl uses a lot of the negative space of the polished areas to accentuate the designs. The painting on the bowl is precise and bold. The piece was fired a near gunmetal black with silvery areas. This was achieved by a higher temperature of firing. The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Marie + Julian”. The bowl is in exceptional condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It has strong firing colorations that add to the overall impact of the piece. This is definitely one of those exciting larger pieces by Maria & Julian Martinez which rarely come around to the marketplace!
