Martinez, Maria – Large Water Jar “Maria Poveka”, 1950’s
This is a stunning larger water jar by Maria Martinez. It is from the 1950s when Maria created a series of pieces which were simply stone polished with no design. As she primarily made the pottery and polished it this was fitting with the other pieces of her career. This jar is an elegant shape with a round shoulder and an elongated neck with a small rim. The entire piece is fully polished and it is thinner walled and light in weight. The water jar is fired a deeper black with a glassy surface. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Maria Poveka”. This is a combination of her Anglo and Tewa names. Her name, “Poveka” means “Water Lilly”. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
