Medicine Flower, Grace – 8″ Tall Jar with 10 Butterflies and Star Lid (1985)

4.5"w x 8"h

$ 6,800.00

This is a striking tall jar by Grace Medicine Flower.  She began her career making miniature pottery with incised designs.  This tall jar is fully polished and etched with designs.  There are three butterflies on the front, each in a medallion and surrounded by etched wind designs.  The angular designs and the circular medallions have a very modernist appearance.  There are seven more butterflies lightly etched onto the polished surface on various places on the jar.  Some near the neck, some near the base.  They are all very lightly etched, where she just took off the surface of the polish.  It is interesting how she used so much open space on the piece to accentute the central design, and give the idea of butterflies in motion.  There is a fully polished star lid. The jar was traditionally fired a glassy black.  Over the course of her career, Grace did not make as many black pieces as red pieces?  Why? She thought they were not as dramatic and colorful as the red fired vessels.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower”.   It is a classic piece of her pottery history!
