Torivio, Frances – Water Jar with Sun and Rain Designs (1980s)

9"w x 7.75"h

$ 700.00

Frances Pino Torivio was known as one of the revivalist Acoma potters in the 1970s.  As one of the Matriarchs of the pueblo, she was influential in teaching other potters at that time. This is a classic water jar from the 1980s.  It is coil-built and painted with bee-weed (black) and red clay slip.  The jar is tightly painted with a classic sun design along with thin line rain clouds.  While it is an iconic Acoma design, this is the first time I’ve seen it on one of Frances’s pieces.  The bottom of the jar is indented in the classic style, a reference to when Acoma pottery was carried on a person’s head.  The jar is signed, “Frances Torivio” on the bottom.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
