This is an intricately painted bowl by Marie Z. Chino. Marie is famous as one of the revivalists at Acoma Pueblo, along with Lucy M. Lewis, Jessie Garcia, and a few others. This bowl is thin-walled and painted with bee-weed (black). The design on the bowl is a series of ightning and rain designs. Note how she painted the rain designs both vertically and at an angle. It is a creative use of the designs and an interesting variation to the classic imagery. The bowl was traditionally fired so there are some very slight color variations to the white. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “M. Z. Chino”. It is always interesting to come across an unusual design that adds to our understanding of the creativity of this important Acoma potter!
